Bloom's Take While it’s fair to say Sennheiser IEMs haven't found the same success their headphone counterparts have in recent years, the IE 600 may have broken the mold with its incredible price to performance ratio for the sub $1000 IEM game. With its exceptional German craftsmanship, timeless look thanks to its literal space-age amorphous metal, generous package and accessories, balanced U-shaped sound signature, and excellent sense of space for a single DD IEM, we think the IE 600 is an excellent buy and a fun, musical experience, especially if sub bass is your thing. The IE 600 is simply beautiful sound. These IEMs not only reproduce the detail and emotion of a recording, they transcend it. Each earphone is a masterpiece, from the hand-finished amorphous metal housing to high-end audio components developed and made by Sennheiser. The balanced frequency response and extremely durable materials have been engineered to provide clear, natural voicing and a unique aesthetic that will retain its good looks for decades.
To achieve a natural sound reminiscent of the neutrality provided by high-end studio monitors, Sennheiser engineers carefully tuned the acoustic back volume inside the nozzle of the IE 600.
This voicing lends a presence and intimacy that brings listeners closer to the music. However, arriving at this level of poise and naturalness had its challenges. For instance, when similar sounds occur in a track simultaneously, it can become difficult for the human ear to resolve all the nuances. The IE 600 resolves this by integrating dual 2-chamber absorbers (D2CA) which capture and attenuate these masking frequencies, revealing even the finest textures of your music.
The zirconium alloy from Heraeus AMLOY Technologies chosen for the IE 600 has triple the hardness and flexural strength of high-performance steel. Shock-frozen during manufacturing, amorphous metals never have a chance to form a crystalline structure like conventional metals. The result is a lustrous, satiny surface that is extraordinarily resistant against corrosion and scratches.
"Amorphous alloys are an extraordinary new class of materials. Our high-tech AMLOY ZR01 is used in components for aerospace and MedTech applications that require ultra-high precision and robustness. We are proud that Sennheiser evaluated our space-grade amorphous alloy and decided to use it for the IE 600."
Jürgen Wachter - Global Head of Heraeus AMLOY Technologies GmbH
The IE 600 housing is fabricated using metal-powder-based 3D printing. Chambers and channels form as part of this additive manufacturing process with no milling required. Outside of the IE 600, one of the only other places you’ll find it is in the drilling head of a NASA Mars Rover where extraordinary resilience in extreme conditions is required. A computer-controlled laser sinters a thin coat of metal powder, welding the molten alloy to the already hardened material beneath it. Layer by layer, the part evolves into its ultimate shape and is finished with a thorough cleaning, steel shot blasting, polishing, and sophisticated surface treatment.
Whatever type of music moves you, with the IE 600, it moves you more and brings your music closer, more alive, and more vivid. The IE 600 manages to incorporate powerful yet fast and accurate low-end response. It’s all in a day’s work for Sennheiser’s TrueResponse single 7 mm driver.
